Assignment 21 A – Reading Reflection No.2
Assignment 21 A – Reading Reflection
No.2
The General Theme or
Argument of the Book
For this reading reflection, I decided to read Innovation and Entrepreneurship by Peter
Drucker. I chose this title because Entrepreneurship was in the title and that
is what our class is all about. I have also heard of Peter Drucker before, so
therefore I was inclined to pick this book to read. Overall, I found the book
to be extremely interesting and informative and it made a lot of great points
about entrepreneurship. Overall, I think its general message was that entrepreneurship
does not just have to be considered high tech and the majority of economic
growth from entrepreneurship is from low tech. In addition, entrepreneurship is
directly involved with the Kondratieff Cycle, which is an economic theory that
spans fifty to sixty years. Lastly, management can be considered a technology that
drive entrepreneurship and economic growth.
Connection to ENT
3003
In my opinion, this book connected and enhanced what I have
been learning in ENT 3003 by really focusing on entrepreneurship, what drives
it, and how it affects the economy. For every assignment we have completed in
this course, the focus is on us being entrepreneurs. Whether it be from
interviewing others to better enhance our idea, growing our social capital,
making elevator pitches, and the like, we have had an entrepreneurial mindset.
This connects to this book because it went over what entrepreneurship is and
what it is not. It also went into innovative opportunities, and our main focus
in this course was our own innovative opportunity where mine is focused on vending
machines in UF libraries.
Design of an Exercise
Based on Innovation
and Entrepreneurship by Peter Drucker, if I had to design an exercise for
this class it would be an assignment for the beginning. It would include having
the student define in their own words what entrepreneurship is and what it is
not. I would also have them create a cycle of innovation and create a list of
places where innovation can stem from.
Biggest Surprise
Overall, I think my biggest ‘aha’ moment when reading is
that the majority of innovation is from no or low-tech firms. This was surprising
to me because I always thought of innovation and technology as going together,
but this book taught me differently. Thus, this differed the most from my expectation
of what kind of company was most entrepreneurial in spirit.
Hey Jamie, I have learned about Peter Drucker in my management and career development course. He is actually considered the father of modern management! I like that you got innovation out of the book as the connection between the book and the class. I agree that innovation does not have to be anything that is over the top in tech. The fidget spinner was a great example, it was just an easy top to play with, but it brought joy and happiness is millions of people.
ReplyDeleteHey Jamie, I can definitely understand why you chose to read a book from Peter Drucker as he was a familiar name. However, I had never heard of him and I am glad I could learn a little bit about him from your assignment. He seems like someone who thinks outside the box and enjoys challenging himself for the better. I am also a fan of your "assignment" for the ENT 3003 class as it is something that help students figure out what they want to gain from taking the course. Awesome post!
