Assignment 9A – Testing the Hypothesis, Part 2
Assignment 9A – Testing the Hypothesis, Part 2
Interview One – My Older Sister
My sister went to school at Pennsylvania State University and she graduated in 2009. She shares a lot in common with others in my opportunity; however, she said she would not have had this need when she was in college. She said that when she studied in the library she did rely on her computer entirely and when she did use it to study she always had her charger. Her need differed because she did not have the need to rent a computer charger. Her underlying cause is different because she did not feel the constraint to only study with her computer when she as in college.
Interview Two – My Mom
My mom now has her own laptop computer; however, when she was in college she did not have a laptop computer to even bring to the library to study with. She falls outside the boundary because she doesn’t know first-hand about studying with a laptop computer. Her need differs because she does not have the experience for being in college with a computer and does not see how there is a need for it. Her underlying cause is different because she doesn’t have experience studying with a computer.
Interview Three – TA
My TA has a lot in common with people inside the boundary. She is a student at the University of Florida and has studied in the library, but always has a charger in her backpack. She has two computer chargers; one for home and one for her backpack. Her need differs from another need because she is not worried about not having a computer charger, but rather is more concerned with there not being an available outlet at the library. Her underlying cause is different because she always has a charger on hand.
Interview Four – My Cousin
My cousin is a senior in high school. He will be attending college next year and has never studied in a library before. He is unaware of the feeling of leaving your computer charger at home. Thus, he falls outside the boundary because he has never experienced this need. He has other needs that he is more concerned with. He worries about forgetting his planner at home or note book for high school, not his computer charger. His underlying cause is different because he does not have the stress and pressure of college.
Interview Five – My Roommate
My roommate is the same age as myself; 21 and a senior in college. In her entire four years at college, she has never studied at the library and only studies in her bedroom. She prefers the comfort of her own space. She shares a lot in common with other college students that have this need; however, she does not have it because she has never studied at the library. She has other needs as a result of studying in her own apartment. This includes her need for internet when her WIFI is slow, since she lives off campus. Her underlying cause is different than people who are in the boundary because she would have the opportunity to rent a charger from the library.

Jamie, I actually understand where many of your interviewees are coming from. Since high school I have usually carried a satchel containing my laptop, phone charger and laptop charge everywhere that I needed to go. Although I don’t seem to have this need I have observed many others who tend to be forgetful and require a service such as this one. At a mere rate of two dollars an hour? That is only 2 bucks for pretty much a full charge! That would also come in handy for emergencies, and not just for study purposes. Great idea!
ReplyDeleteThis exercise was a good way to find out which potential customers are inside the boundary and which ones are outside of the boundary. There are plenty of students who prefer to study at home instead of the library. Also, some people study at the library frequently and always have their charger. But this service will be only be used as a last resort, so even those students that rarely forget their charger can be potential customers in case of an emergency.
ReplyDeleteHey Jamie!
ReplyDeleteAfter reading the interview summaries I can understand why none of the people you interviewed have a need for your opportunity. Also, similar to my interviews, a lot of people seem to prefer studying at home because it may be more convenient then traveling to a place. The service will do well however because there is still a large amount of people who love going to the library.
Awesome post!
